Vocabulary for PTE Academic or IELTS Writing: Collocation Strategy

It is noticeable that PTE Academic or IELTS test takers often face difficulties and feel apprehensive when it comes to word choices. One of the proven ways to build up your vocabulary and maximize your writing score is academic collocations. Collocations are pairs of words that occur frequently together, with a high degree of probability; moreover, they don’t have to be used next to one another, and they just have to occur in the same sentence.

Here is a perfect example.

The internet has played a crucial role in globalization. [OR] The role played by the internet in globalization has been crucial.

Additionally, academic collocations uncovers restrictions on which words can go together and which words do not. For instance, we say that decisions, roles, factors can be crucial, but we do not normally say a crucial man or woman. It is also noted that collocations are not like grammar rules; they depend on probability rather than being absolute and fixed. They are examples of how languages normally or typically put words together.

But why are academic collocations so important in language learning?

A recent research has shown that knowledge of collocations is a good indication of general ESL proficiency, whereas other research suggests that natural use of collocation is a distinguishing feature when native-speaker texts are compared with texts written by expert users or near-native speakers. Therefore, we can infer that acquiring collocations is an integral part of acquiring proficiency in the target language.

The test takers should make the most of collocations to ace the Writing test. It is recommended that learners should not only learn individual words but also focus on what other words they are used with.

Moreover, it is widely acknowledged that collocations play an indispensable role in second language learning, particularly at the intermediate and advanced levels. Collocations enhance improvement of learners’ oral communication, listening comprehension, and reading speed, and that teaching collocation enables learners to be aware of language chunks used by native speakers in speech and writing.

This article will equip you with 5 useful academic collocations, so you can use these collocations to improve your essay in PTE Academic Essay Writing or IELTS Writing Task 2.
